Necklace and earrings created by Alan Martin Gard

ALAN GARD (b.1935)

Alan Martin Gard, a British jewelry designer, was born in London in 1935. He apprenticed for seven years under the jeweler Crombie’s on Bond Street and also worked for Andrew Grima. He formed his own business in 1964.

Gard was part of the Renaissance in British jewelry design. Like his contemporaries, he favored textured gold and sculptural forms. The centerpieces were always semiprecious or precious stones, prong-set to reveal the beauty of the natural stone. Diamonds were used sparingly as accents.

Gard’s work has been displayed in exhibitions at Goldsmiths’ Hall and the Design Centre London; it has been collected by celebrities, politicians, and royalty. Gard also designed jewelry and medals for the films Nicholas and Alexandra and Modesty Blaise. He continues to work out of his Hatton Garden workshop today.
