elizabeth gage (b. 1937)
ELIZABETH GAGE MBE, BORN IN LONDON IN 1937, IS a leading figure in British jewelry design,
since the 1970s, she has been renowned for her unique interpretations of historical and cultural motifs. Her work is celebrated for balancing bold forms with subtlety and wearability. Gage studied at the Sir John Cass College during the 1960s, and in 1968, she created a collection for Cartier New York. Just a few years later, in 1972, she received international recognition by winning the De Beers International Diamond Award for her innovative ‘Agincourt’ ring design.
The ‘Agincourt’ ring remains perhaps her most iconic creations. The first version, made in 1967, was originally intended to resemble a modern drum, but Gage later remarked that it looked more like a Persian carpet—thus inspiring its name. Since then, she has developed many variations of the design.
One of her signature designs is the ‘classic kiss style pin,’ named for the diagonal cross motif at its center. This piece showcases Gage's affinity for vibrant, irregular gemstones and her skill in crafting modern jewelry that resonates with historical influences.
in 2017 she was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to business and the arts. HER JEWELRY CAN BE FOUND IN MANY MUSEUM COLLECTIONS, INCLUDING THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM IN LONDON.
