FRANK PATANIA, JR. (1932-2004)

Frank Patania Jr. was a celebrated American jeweler, silversmith, and educator who both carried forward and expanded the artistic vision established by his father, Frank Patania, Sr. Born in Tucson, Arizona, he was immersed from childhood in the creative atmosphere of the renowned Thunderbird Shop. Under the guidance of his father, he developed exceptional technical skill while shaping a bold and independent design voice.

Patania Jr. became known for his sculptural metalwork, innovative stone settings, and use of high-grade gemstones. While grounded in traditional Southwestern materials and techniques, his work embraced modernist principles—clean lines, strong dimensionality, and dynamic composition. In contrast to his father’s more organic, nature-inspired motifs, Patania Jr.’s designs are distinguished by a refined geometric aesthetic. This synthesis placed him at the forefront of the American studio jewelry movement.

Nationally recognized early in his career, he was invited to participate in Young Americans 1962, a seminal exhibition and competition sponsored by the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York and sponsored by the American Federation of Arts. His submitted neckpiece brought significant attention to his work. That same year, he was included in the first annual survey of modern American jewelry published by Craft Horizons magazine; represented by a bracelet, later featured in the publication, and acquired for the permanent jewelry collection of the Renwick Gallery.

In 1964—the year of his father’s passing—Patania Jr. founded the Patania Jewelry Studio & Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, creating a space dedicated to technical excellence and artistic innovation. Throughout his career, he mentored emerging jewelers and collaborated with skilled Native American artisans, honoring tradition while advancing contemporary design. In 1969, following in his father’s footsteps, he brought his ten-year-old son, Sam, into the workshop, encouraging his creative development. Today, Sam’s company, Patania Sterling Silver Originals, continues the family legacy.
