GEORGE WEIL (B.1938)
George Weil, born in 1938 in Vienna, Austria, is a sculptor, netsuke maker, and jeweler. He moved to London with his family a year later.
He briefly attended St. Martin’s School of Art in 1956, then worked in Hatton Garden as a jeweler. He sculpted busts of famous figures such as Winston Churchill and Sammy Davis Jr., as well as other works. Clients for his jewelry included Princess Margaret, Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Sellers, and Sammy Davis Jr.
In 1979, Weil sold his jewelry business. He first collected and then took up the ancient Japanese art of netsuke, becoming the only non-Japanese person to be inducted into the Art Carver Society of Japan. His netsuke reside in the collections of the Imperial Family of Japan. The Victoria & Albert Museum owns his jewelry among other public and private collections. Weil now lives in Israel.
